Product setup overview
The three ways to create a custom product in Customezo, how to choose between them, and the checklist every product must pass before it goes live.
There are three ways to create a custom product: Import from Shopify, Start from a template, or create a Canvas product. Whichever you choose, the steps are the same: define its sides and print areas, assign a print method and pricing, then publish.
A custom product is simply a product your customers can personalize.
Choose how to create the product
Go to Products → Create product. You get three options.
| Import from Shopify | Start from a template | Canvas product | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starts from | An existing Shopify product | A ready-made Customezo product template | A physical sheet size |
| Mockups | Your Shopify product images | Included in the template | None — the sheet is the design surface |
| Print areas | You set them up | Preconfigured, you review them | The whole sheet is printable |
| Variants & prices | Stay in sync with Shopify | Created when you publish | Created when you publish |
| Best for | Products you already sell | New product types you want to launch fast | DTF, transfers, stickers, full-sheet prints |
| Guide | Import from Shopify | Create from a template | Canvas products |
Not sure? Use Import from Shopify. It is the recommended path: inventory, pricing and images keep living in Shopify, and the Design button metafields are written for you.
The setup checklist
Whichever path you take, a product is only ready when all of this is true:
- Sides defined — every printable face exists, in the right order, each marked required or optional.
- Background per side — either variant photos or a mask plus fill colors.
- Print area per side — size, position and shape, applied to the right variants.
- Print method assigned — decides export DPI, format and the designer’s quality rules.
- Pricing profile assigned (optional) — if you charge for extra sides, add-ons or effects.
- Design template attached (optional) — if the designer should open pre-filled.
- Published and active on Shopify — with the designer enabled.
The Print Area Designer shows a live checklist of items 1–3 and will tell you exactly which side is missing what.
Assign the print method before sizing print areas
The print method sets the export DPI. The Print Area Designer shows you the resulting print-file pixel dimensions live, and those numbers are only meaningful once the method is assigned. See Print methods.
Product statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | Still being configured. Not offered to customers. |
| Active | Live. The Design Now button can appear on the storefront. |
| Archived | Kept for reference, not offered to customers. |
Separately, each product has a sync status that describes its relationship with Shopify — Not synced, Synced, Drift detected, Shopify deleted or Sync failed. See Publishing & sync.
Enabling and disabling the designer
The Enable designer / Disable designer action on the product page controls whether that product is customizable. When you toggle it, Customezo also updates the storefront visibility of the Design Now button.
If you see a warning that the storefront button could not be updated, the change was saved in Customezo but Shopify rejected the metafield write — usually a temporary permissions or connectivity issue. Retry from the product page, then press Re-check on the dashboard.
Editing a product later
Open Products, select the product, and you can:
- Open Print Area Designer — change sides, mockups and print areas.
- Configure designer — designer options for this product.
- Publish / Update on Shopify — push changes to your store.
- Edit in Portal — open the same product in the Portal.
- View in Shopify — jump to the Shopify product.
- Remove from Customezo — stop managing it here. The Shopify product itself is not deleted.
Changing print areas after orders exist
Existing orders keep the print files that were generated for them. New designs use the new configuration. If you significantly resize a print area, review any open orders before production.
Per-product customer settings
Two store-wide settings can be changed for a single product from its page in Customezo:
| Section | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Customer communication → Communication mode | Store default, or one of No automatic e-mail, Design summary, Summary + edit link, Proof approval. | Store default |
| Add-to-cart confirmations → Confirmation fields | Store default, Custom list (this product’s own fields) or Off. | Store default |
For example, require proof approval only on engraved products, or ask an extra question only on products with a date. Details: Proof approval & customer e-mails and Add-to-cart confirmations.
